Modern living meets country cottage

Dwell was approached by a local client with the brief of improving the flow the ground floor of a previously-extended cottage.  The goal: to turn an existing dark kitchen into a modern, open-plan family-friendly space.

With the client resident abroad for the duration of the project, Dwell’s role included the design and project management of the project from inception to completion, working hand in hand with specialist suppliers Smallbone of Devizes, to implement and complete the scheme in the client’s absence.

By relocating but retaining the larder facility, airing cupboard and tank rooms, and removing a portion of the original external wall that split the old extension from the cottage, the kitchen was allowed to flow into a new breakfast room and family lounge creating an airy, bright space to house family life.  A bespoke hidden sliding wall system allowed the breakfast room and family lounge to be divided easily on an ad-hoc basis.

Dwell sourced materials including a fantastic floor finish from Fired Earth, and designed and commissioned a computerised lighting system with pre-configured lighting scenes to suit a variety of activities.
