Detached Garage and Workshop

Dwell designed this elegant building nestled within the steeply-sloping garden of a listed cottage despite myriad constraints

The difficult nature of the site meant that the only prospect of vehicular access was across the neighbouring pub car park some 5-feet overhead! A poolhouse, listed boundary wall and a substantial fir tree further complicated the situation and necessitated a carefully-considered and intricate solution.

Dwell developed a scheme which addressed the height difference, creating a raised plinth to access the two garages. Making maximum use of the tight site, a large workshop is set into the slope behind the garages. Two side rooms open onto the garden, providing ample storage for garden tools and equipment.

Clad in oak weatherboarding, and tiled with local handmade Keymer clay tiles, the building sits comfortably within its historic context.
